Nigeria: Taraba State’s dry season farmers worried about growing insecurity. The farmers, who fear that the insecurity will have a negative impact on them, called for urgent action from the state government and security forces.
According to reports, the frequency of killings and kidnappings in different parts of the state was very high. Lau, Ardo-Kola, Bali, Karim-Lamido, and Yorro as the worst-hit council areas.
A farmer, Yahaya Mafindi, and his colleague, Abdullahi Bello cautioned that banditry could hamper essential farming activities across Taraba.
Saidu Dauda, a farmer in Donada village of Lau Council Area, shared a distressing account of the situation, disclosing that two villagers were murdered, while eight others were kidnapped in Kunini village just last week.
Hajiya Laraba Aminu Abdul, Chairperson of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Taraba State, expressed the same worry during the launch of the distribution of farm inputs for the 2023/2024 dry season farming in Jalingo.
Abdul stressed that failing to tackle insecurity would deter many from engaging in dry-season farming.
Also, the senator representing Taraba South, David Jimkuta, recently sounded the alarm over a possible famine in the state and the country at large due to the rate of killing of farmers.
Meanwhile, other residents of Taraba have urged the government to address the security challenges plaguing all parts of the state.
“I desperately need the government to protect our lives and property from armed bandits and kidnappers in 2024,” Adamu Saleh, a retired police Sergeant, told DAILY POST.
Ndafru Godwin, who complained about the high cost of living in the state and in other parts of the country, called for a significant reduction in the prices of goods and services.
