Jermaine Lamarr Cole, professionally known as J. Cole, was born on January 28, 1985. His father James was an African-American veteran, and his mother is Kay Cole.
He is the youngest of the two sons from James and Kay and the older one is Zach. Cole.
J. Cole was born and raised on a military base in Frankfurt, West Germany, until after his parents split. Following their divorce, Cole and Zach relocated to Fayetteville, North Carolina with their mother.

Four years older than J. Cole, Zachary James Cole, was born on April 9, 1981. He and J. Cole were primarily raised by their mother Kay Cole following their father’s departure from the family. After the divorce, Kay took on multiple jobs to sustain her family.
