Southern California residents experienced a jolt on Friday morning as a magnitude-4.2 earthquake rattled the region. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck at 10:55 a.m. with its epicenter near Lytle Creek, a census-designated place in the San Gabriel Mountains close to Rancho Cucamonga. The seismic event was initially reported as a 4.6-magnitude, downgraded to 4.4, then to 4.1, before being upgraded again to 4.2 shortly before 11:20 a.m.

The affected area lies at the convergence of the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults, historically known for seismic activity. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Geologists emphasize that significant damage typically occurs with earthquakes exceeding a magnitude of 4 or 5.
Notably, video footage posted on Facebook by Pedro Ernesto Moreira captured an intriguing moment just before the quake. Moreira’s dog, Coco, is seen waking up seconds before the earthquake hit, showcasing animals’ ability to sense seismic activity.
Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones shed light on the quake’s location, stating that it occurred “near Lytle Creek in Cajon Pass, where the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults come together.” The historical context adds significance, as a similar location experienced a magnitude-5.2 earthquake in 1970, with a foreshock measuring 4.0.The impact of the quake extended far beyond its epicenter. According to the USGS’s “Did You Feel It?” map, residents reported feeling the tremors as far south as San Diego, over 120 miles away.
While the earthquake itself may not be cause for major concern, Dr. Jones encourages using this event as an opportunity to review and discuss natural disaster preparedness plans with loved ones.
