Ronda Stryker, an affluent American heiress and board member of medical equipment giant Stryker Corporation, has wielded her philanthropic influence to bring about a revolutionary change in education. In her most recent act of benevolence, she bestowed an astonishing $100 million donation upon Spelman College, marking the most substantial single contribution ever made to a Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
A Generous Legacy
Born in 1954 as the granddaughter of Stryker Corporation’s founder, Homer Stryker, Ronda inherited approximately 6% of the corporation from her parents. As the sole sibling serving on the board, she has consistently channeled her wealth into supporting various causes, with a pronounced focus on education.
Historic Benefaction to Spelman College
On January 18, 2024, Ronda Stryker and her husband, William Johnston, the chairman of Greenleaf Trust, unveiled their groundbreaking $100 million donation to Spelman College in Atlanta. Not only is this contribution the largest in the college’s history, but it also stands as the most significant single donation ever made to an HBCU.
Spelman College intends to allocate $75 million of this monumental donation to establish endowed scholarships, while the remaining funds will be utilized for diverse purposes, including the creation of an academic emphasis on public policy and democracy, along with enhancements to student housing.
Educational Impact
This substantial gift will play a pivotal role in attracting exceptionally talented students by removing potential financial barriers in the admission process. Representing a transformative contribution, it will markedly fortify the college’s commitment to eliminating financial hindrances and ensure a smoother journey for students pursuing a Spelman education.
