UFC Vegas 297, the first pay-per-view event of 2024, delivered intense action at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In the main event, Dricus du Plessis emerged victorious over Sean Strickland in a closely contested battle for the UFC middleweight title. Watch here.
Du Plessis, hailing from South Africa, claimed the split-decision win, making him the first South African world champion in the promotion. Strickland, the former titleholder, fought valiantly behind his jab but faced challenges from Du Plessis’ increased aggression, pressure, and successful takedowns. Despite Strickland’s defensive prowess, Du Plessis’ power and strategic adjustments secured the victory.
In the co-headliner, Raquel Pennington captured the vacant women’s bantamweight belt with a unanimous decision over Mayra Bueno Silva. Pennington, the American veteran, overcame a tough opening round to dominate the later rounds, earning a comfortable win and the championship.
Other notable moments from the UFC 297 fight card included British featherweight Arnold Allen’s unanimous decision victory over Movsar Evloev, and welterweight Neil Magny’s late-stoppage win against rising star Mike Malott. Despite a competitive bout, all seven male Canadians faced defeat on the night, with American middleweight Chris Curtis also securing a split decision over Marc-Andre Barriault.
