With his triumph at the recent Emmy Awards, the renowned musician achieves EGOT status, joining the elite club of performers who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
Elton John, the 76-year-old entertainer, clinched his first Emmy Award for “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.” The concert film, capturing his 2022 farewell performance, took home the prize in the Outstanding Variety Special category.
Although unable to attend the ceremony due to recent knee replacement surgery, Elton John’s husband, David Furnish, shared the exciting news. The victory solidifies John’s place among distinguished entertainers like Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg, and John Legend, making him the 19th person in history to achieve EGOT status.
In a statement expressing his gratitude, Elton John said, “Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career; I am incredibly grateful.”
The Emmy win adds to John’s impressive collection, including five Grammys, a Tony for “Aida,” and two Oscars for songs in “The Lion King” and “Rocketman.” While accepting the award on John’s behalf, Ben Winston, producer of “Farewell From Dodger Stadium,” highlighted the historic nature of the show, being Disney’s first-ever live global stream.
President Biden also extended his congratulations to Elton John, acknowledging the artist’s impactful career in a social media post: “Sir Elton John has been a tidal wave throughout his career to help people rise up and make hope and history rhyme.”
