The Golden Globes of 2024 witnessed numerous remarkable moments, from the Suits cast reunion to Succession’s triumph. However, Lily Gladstone’s impactful speech stole the spotlight after securing the Best Actress accolade for Killers of the Flower Moon.
In Martin Scorsese’s film depicting the early 1900s Osage Nation murders, the 37-year-old actress, who starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, made history as the inaugural recipient of a Golden Globe from Blackfeet and Nimiipuu heritage.
Dressed in an elegant white column dress and black cape, Gladstone captivated the audience with her acceptance speech, commencing in Blackfeet. She expressed gratitude in English, stating, “I love everyone in this room right now, thank you. I don’t have words. I just spoke a bit of Blackfeet language, a beautiful community, a nation that raised me, that encouraged me to keep going, to keep doing this.”
Acknowledging her historic win, Gladstone thanked her mother, highlighting her efforts to introduce Blackfeet language into the classroom, enabling Gladstone to grow up with it. She emphasized the significance of her ability to speak in Blackfeet on stage, referencing Hollywood’s early days when sound mixers would reverse lines spoken in English by Native actors to capture Native languages on camera.
“This is a historic win. It doesn’t belong to just me; I’m holding it with all my beautiful sisters, the film, my mother – I’m just standing on all of your shoulders,” said Gladstone, praising Scorsese, DiCaprio, and De Niro for their allyship.
The evening featured several memorable moments, including Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner officially confirming their relationship in Hollywood and various stunning beauty looks, with the bob hairstyle dominating the night.
